Step 3 - Applying for admission

Step 3 - Applying for admission

The application process

Once you have done your research and determined your preference for course and education provider, you need to complete an application from. Your provider will then make an assessment as to your suitability to undertake the course. If they determine your application as suitable you will be made an offer of a place for enrolment and be provided with a written agreement.
Your provider can charge you an application fee to make the assessment for your suitability into the course but they must not accept any course money from you until you have signed the written agreement.
Students should not make educational choices solely on the basis of hoping to achieve a particular migration outcome as Australia’s migration policy will continue to change and adapt to Australia’s economic needs.
If you are successful in gaining a Student visa this will entitle you to come to Australia on a temporary basis for a specified period to undertake study. You may decide to apply for permanent residency upon completing your studies, but you must note that this is an entirely separate process and there is no guarantee that, on the basis of having held a student visa, you will meet the requirements to be granted permanent residence.

Obtaining application forms

You can obtain an application form from either a local Australian education agent or the institution’s nominated contact officer. The Australian Education Office or Australian Embassy  in your country can provide a list of local Australian education agents or details of the institution's nominated contact officer.

Collecting other documents relevant to your application

This will typically include:
  • a document with the name of the institution you are applying to, the name of the course you are applying for and second and third course preferences at the same institution
  • full details of previous study, including copies of qualifications already awarded to you
  • evidence of your English language proficiency (for undergraduate and postgraduate studies, and vocational education and training)
If you are unsure what documents you should provide contact the institution you have selected. If you are currently enrolled in a course of study, you might be granted provisional acceptance on the basis of previous academic performance in anticipation that your final examination results do not differ greatly from the grades already attained.

Submitting the application form

After filling in your application form, you should attach all the required documents and submit them direct to the institutions. Depending on the country you are from and the institution you have selected, you may be instructed to send your form to either:
  • a local agent of the institution in your country, or
  • to the international office or nominated contact officer of the institution

Receiving a confirmation of enrolment

The institution will assess your application and supporting documents and advise if you meet the entry requirements and will be admitted. If successful, the institution will send you a letter of offer. Depending on your country of nationality and the education sector of your study you may be required to undergo a pre-visa assessment before the institution issues an Electronic Confirmation of Enrolment (eCoE). The eCoE is the only accepted evidence of enrolment for processing student visa applications.
You may be required to pay tuition fees before applying for the student visa. The institution will advise you of its requirements but generally it will require payment of at least one semester of course fees.
Now you can begin the process of applying for your student visa.
